Major "Poi Documentary" Project - Poll |
|
Hi poiple,
First I have to apologize that the entire thread is in English - I really start to regret my decision to learn Ancient Greek instead of French back then at school
If you have some spare time I'd be very glad if you could support me by reading this thread and give me your valuable opinion - I need your help. I can promise you that it is worth it - if you want to know why, just read on
=================================================
First of all I'd like to ask you something:
Who have been the most inspiring and impressive poi spinners for you personally in the last few years?
Is it Nick, Yuta, Olive, Ronan, Rob, Drew, Sage - or anyone completely else?
=================================================
I know that a poll like this might cause some discussions or even annoyance but by no means do I want to start another "who is the best spinner in the world" discussion - if you feel offended already and would love to lynch the guy who has the guts to ask a shameless question like this I really do have to apologize. I am not talking about the "best" but about the most "inspiring" and "impressive" poi spinners for you personally. I would very much like to explain to you why I ask you this question.
For starters I want to give you some background information about myself. My name is Max, I am 21 years old and I am a prospective Flim maker from Germany. So far I shot a couple of short films and documentaries, some of them award-winning, some of them not hehe. Right now I start out one of the biggest projects I've ever done so far, a project which is huge, expensive and exciting. Exciting not only for me but also for the entire spinning community.
I have always had this plan to shoot a major Flim that challenges and interests me equally before starting a "typical" filmmaker's career (which is lots of not-so-exciting internships and then studying at Flim school). A few months ago I then came up with the idea to shoot a documentary about "poi" spinning.
Now one of the things that is very important for every documentary is to clarify some basic questions.
In this case some of those questions might be "What is poi?" ,"Where are the roots of poi-spinning?" and "Who are the people that made poi so popular and what it is today?".
These are only a few essentials outsiders need to know to really understand where this art is coming from. I've been thinking a lot about what people need to know about Poi, what kind of things I'd personally enjoy to see in a documentary and which facts have to be mentioned etc.
But as every human being I am a very subjective person and my perceiption of who eventually is or has been incredible important for the entire spinning community is disturbed by my subjectivity. This is where you come in! I would love to hear your opinion, your personal experiences and little stories about which spinners had the most impact on you and which ones pushed the whole community most in your opinion. My plan would then be to go to the top three or five of those spinners and do a couple of interviews & shooting with them.
To give you a foretaste of what is to come if my plan works out and I finally get to work with those great people I'd like to show you what "my films" look like. Thus I uploaded a demo reel I made for a friend a couple of days ago: http://rs214.rapidshare.com/files/108199274/Bellini_DemoReel.mov
This should be enough early information about the project - more to come! I'll get in touch with the people I'd love to have in the documentary asap and explain everything to them in a more detailed manner
Thank you so much for your time and efforts to read through the entire thread and I'd love to hear from you!
Vive la France
Max
P.S: of course you can PM me too if you don't want to post your opinions publicly
/e: changed the basic question slightly

Hi duvan, and welcome on our board !
That's a dangerous thread you come in with !
Hopefully, there is not a lot of people talking English in here, so there won't be lot of flaming...
 |
 |
Who is in your opinion the most important poi-spinner of the last few years? |
I think you can't ask a question like this in this way. There is no "most", there are few people that make things going on and improving. And hte majority is following, some of them taking side roads sometime, some of them stepping in the trails.
And what do you define by "important" ?
Somebody who is trying out new stuff everyday (Rob), or somebody that has already mastered the art of poi and do shows everywhere in the world without clearly improve personnally (Nick) ?
 |
 |
Nick, Yuta, Olive, Ronan, Rob, Drew, Sage ? |
Definitely not Sage :p
You seem to forgot Alphalight (he's German, you should know him !!), Arashi, and Cyrille (check this : http://astralo1.free.fr/080316_WS_Cyrille.pdf ), and of course a lot of others but the majors indeed are here.
Everyone of them has a particularity, a style that is unique and a way of doing poi and finding new tricks that can't be compared like you want to do !
But if I have to give out one and only name, I would say maybe Ronan, I love his poi-style.
But hey ! Alphalight is bloody awesome in fire !
And Rob does some weird tricks, also Olive can break the arms and shoulders of any poispinner with his workshops !
So like I said, everyone of them is great, and this discipline is not about "the best" (or even the most "important" like you said, which is more or less the same), but sharing.
 |
 |
which ones pushed the whole community most in your opinion |
A whole bunch of ppl ! , maybe all that have been cited before, minus Sarge.
That was for the poll part.
I've watch your video.
I must say it is very beautiful and original too. And I do love this song
Congrats ! Who is the juggler ?
Let's continue with the questions :
Do you practice poi ? Since when ?
Other props too ?
It is a great thing that you want to do a documentary on the fire spinning community and be sure the BC Concept will help you in any way possible to do so.
If you want to come to France in order to shoot some fire spinning with the Eiffel Tower in the background, just tell us, we will be happy to help you out
Also I want to know : are you planning to document the whole European community, or just the one person you chose and who accepted to be filmed ?
Because as far as I'm concerned, the best thing in poi spinning (let's say we englobe the whole spinning thing) is not one person finding new tricks in his garage and then posting them on youtube and HoP, but it's the conventions and the meetings, where the sharing takes a big place with workshops and fun and muffins
Ok, that should do for now
Bye
~ktr

Hi Das, Hi Kooothor,
first of all I really wanna thank you for your quick respones. Some people told me that they didn't really like the question about the "most important" poi spinner and somehow I feel like they're right. Thus I changed the basic question a little so that you can imagine better what I'd like to know from you
@Kooothor: I'm a fire spinner so I should be used to flaming, shouldn't I?
thank you very much for your post! I must confess that I haven't heard from Cyrille so far but what you just showed me is MIND BLASTING and PERFECT for a documentary like the one I intend to shoot! Thank you so much! Do you know if Cyrille knows English? I'd love to get in touch with him.
Thank you for your compliment on my video. The juggler is a very good friend of mine who's been attending the Théâtre Cirqule in Geneve. I think you might know Oliver who is attending that school at the moment (he's a staff juggler) - met him a few weeks ago, really nice guy! Told me he know the whole French spinning scene so I guess you might know him as well.
To your questions: I practice poi since nearly six years by now and did staff/contact staff for six years as well.
I want to cover the whole European Poi Community thus I want to travel to France and England as well to meet some of the Poi-"Gurus" but I will definitely attend the European Juggling Convention as well.
Let me just say that I definitely intend to come to Paris to do a lot of shooting there but I do not want to rush you with some vague information so please be patient I will very soon contact the "French connection".
@DAS: Not quite sure if I get you right but are you asking me to translate? Unfortunately I can't do that but I will ask a friend of mine who might have the time to do so
salut !
Max
PS: Funny to see that the board automatically corrects misspelling of your name, Kooothor hehe

======================================= ==========
======================================= ==========
http://rs214.rapidshare.com/files/108199274/Bellini_DemoReel.mov

hi guys,
I've been on vacation recently to finish the script and what can I say.. it's done! Besides the fact that I am lying in bed at the moment with a cold infection I am glad that everything turned out pretty well so far. Yet I still have lots of work to do (of course ). I am currently working out a schedule for shooting in July / August and I'd like to visit u in France in the late August / beginning of September. I will contact Kooothor and a couple of other guys whose help I may need within the next. Are there going to be a couple of French Poi spinners at the EJC as well?
salut
Max
